Alvin was born on the family farm not far from Summerberry, Saskatchewan.  Alvin's father, James Colin Bryan, admired Thomas Alva Edison and so named one of his sons after the great inventor. Alvin didn't like the name Alva at all and therefore encouraged the name "Alvin".

Inez had been a family friend.
