Notes for Roy Clifford BRYAN

Roy Clifford Bryan was the first born son to the union of his father James Colin Bryan and mother Wilhelmina "Minnie" Hilda Lieske but he had six half-brothers and one half-sister on his arrival.

On December 28, 1916, nearing the end of World War I, Roy lied about his age, saying he was born in 1897 (rather than the true 1899) to join the Canadian armed forces. The papers also read that he put his permanent address as Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba and occupation as farmer.

Roy and his wife, Daisy, had a farm about nine miles out of the town of Sanctuary, Saskatchewan.  It was approximately a section of land in total, not all in one piece.  The had to get their water from Sanctuary and transport it to the farm.  This was a major contributor to why Roy and Daisy farmed with only machinery ~ no horses which were still common at that time. They did have a cat to help keep the rodent population down and chickens.  Roy’s little brother, Les, came out to help on the farm in 1929 (?).  Les tried to raise some wild ducklings but they all died without their mother.)  Daisy bought the bread they required because their stove was too small to make it at home.

In 1960 Roy and Daisy moved to Kyle, Sask.

Obituary for Roy Clifford Bryan

BRYAN - Roy Clifford, age 87 of Kyle, a retired farmer passed away Thursday, December 4, at Swift Current Nursing Home. Funeral services were held 2:30 pm Monday, December 8, from Chapel Culham/Bowers Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Alan Minarcik officiating. Internment was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Culham/Bowers Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were Comrads: Bill Beattie, Mel Egland, John McKechney, Leonard Jacobson, Gordon Baker, Alfred Strom. The deceased is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Pearl Christie, Vancouver; Mrs. Ada McLeod, New Westminster; 4 brothers, Ray, Victoria; Elmer and wife Arnie, Arizona; Leslie & wife Peggy, Burnaby, B.C.; Bill Wolseley, Sask; 1 sister-in-law, Mrs. Inez Bryan, Vancouver. Predeceased by his loving wife Daisy, 1980, 2 brothers, Stanley and Alvin. Mr. Roy Clifford Bryan was born to James and Wilhlemina Bryan November 25, 1898 at Summerberry, Sask. Following his formal education, Roy enlisted in the Canadian army during the first world war. Following his discharge, Roy returned to the Summerberry district. During 1923 he was united in marriage to the former Daisy Marshall at Grenfell. The couple farmed in the Wolseley district until 1928 at which time they moved to a farm in the Sanctuary district near Kyle. The couple continued their farming operations until 1960 at which time they took up permanent residence in the town of Kyle. They farmed from their town home until retirement in 1962. Mr. Bryan was active in the community serving on town council, active with the senior citizens association, a member of the Kyle branch of the Canadian Legion, Roy was always ready to give a helping hand to those who needed it, until ill health forced him to the Palliser Hospital in 1982 and thence to the Nursing Home in January of 1986. In his memory those wishing may make donations to the Kyle White Bear Integrated-facility.
