Further information for Samuel "Sam" Thorn

 

  • Sam lost his right eye in a childhood injury, apparently he bumped a table corner, his eye was forced from the socket and there being no immediate medical help available, the eye was lost. Most photographs of Sam were taken showing only his left side.

Excerpt from Edna (Thorne) VanHorne's 1912 Travel Diary:  Began her day in Wellington, Ontario.  "Thurs 17 had breakfast late. every thing good to eat. all went in to Uncle Ernests for dinner Aunt S went to Uncle Phil last night to help pick up apples after dinner. Edna took us to Uncle Phil & Aunt H & we got home just dark. saw grandpa Thornes old place. Phil Earl came home unexpectedly. fine little chap. Went to Grandmas for supper. King came & saw the pictures with Phil Earl."

Under picture (above) she had written "Grandpa Thorne's old home."  [in Hillier].

  • 1881 Canada Census - Ontario - Prince Edward - Hillier - shows Sam Thorn (age 47) farmer and Cleo Thorn (age 40) plus sons Charles S Thorn (age 20) and Fred G [sic] Thorn (age 19).  Household religion - Church of England. 
  • 1901 Canada Census - British Columbia - Burrard District -  shows Sam (age 66) and Cleo (age 60) having a single man lodger, Archibald McNichol.
