  • 1638 William Thorne may have arrived  from England on the ship "Confidence".  [Note:

 

  • William was a Puritan, with Anabaptists leanings

 

  • 1638 May 2, William Thorne was admitted as a  Freeman in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony

 

  • 1641 June 29, William served on a Salem jury.
 
  • 1641-1642 William was convicted of giving assistance to escaped prisoners and was fined f 6 2/3 for "concealing, hiding and supplying." 

 

  • 1643 February 28, "Goodman Thorne" is recorded in the Quarterly Court of Salem: "Divers of Lynn Gone to Long Island and some not warned." I ["Goodman" be equivalent to "Mr."  and "not warned" equivalent to "not receiving summons".

 

  • 1643 departed from Lyn Massachusetts for Gravesend, New Netherlands ... the move was most likely an impromptu move along with others who were followers Lady Deborah Moody  - "a strong-willed and determined woman who made no secret of her non-conformist views" and promoted religious tolerance.   

 

  • 1643 William Thorne's family was one of the original families to establish Gravesend. 

 

  • 1643 successfully escaped Indian conflict.

 

  • 1644 fall or spring 1645  - after Indian treaty - returned to Gravesend.

 

  • 1645 William Thorne's family  was one 17 English families to establish Flushing Long Island. 

 

  • 1645 October 10, made patent for planter's allotment in Flushing.

 

  • 1646 Living in Flushing, Long Island.

 

  • 1648 April 27, appointed magistrate of Flushing, along with John Townsend and John Hicks. 

 

  • 1657 July, records suggest  that William Thorne was a proprietor of Jamaica and perhaps resided there and records make note of his marriage to "Sussannah Thorne" .

 

  • 1657 December,   William Thorne  was the third signer of Remonstrance of Flushing (precursor to the Bill of Rights). His, William Thorne Jr,  was also a signer.   [After reading the Remonstrance of Flushing, you may be encouraged to read the Aftermath of the Remonstrance.]

 

  • John Thorne died between 1657 and 1664  and is believed to be buried in the Quaker "Friends Cemetery" in Flushing.

 

Through the years William Thorne showed he was a man of strong political and religious convictions ~ one who believed in religious tolerance.
