Nov 05 Cairo |
|
Morning visit to
the pyramids of Giza. While once located in remote desert, they
now touch the suburbs of modern Cairo. Visit
the Sphinx with its lion’s body and man’s face.
Afternoon tour the Egyptian Museum
with over 10,000 pieces from every period of Egyptian
history (our guide will direct us to a select number of
important pieces before we explore on our own).
Evening transfer to railway station
and board
overnight train to Aswan.
Accommodations: Overnight on sleeper train
(est 12 hours) .
|
|
Expected arrival for Aswan
in early morning,
but as ever, should be prepared for "Egypt time"! Aswan
has a distinctively African feel to it. Small enough to walk
around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the
Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. A morning walk
in the souk (old town with it's market place).
Afternoon: board a local boat known as a felucca, to
explore this area of the Nile from the water. Cross to
the West Bank and mount camels for a short
hour-long ride to view the ruined sixth century monastery of
St. Simeon. Back on felucca, sail past
the Agha Khan Mausoleum and make a stop at the botanical
gardens on Kitchener Island. Later visit a Nubian
village where we'll take a walk around the community before
experiencing a traditional dinner at a local home.
Accommodations in Aswan
|
|
EARLY morning (4am) start.
Travel deep into the desert
to the temple of Abu Simbel on the shores of Lake Nasser. The round trip drive
is about 5 hours.

|
| Nov 08 Felucca on the Nile
|
|
Board a felucca. Spend
the rest of the day on the river and a night under the
stars.
Feluccas are very basic traditional Nile sailboats and make
for an extremely relaxing and enjoyable way to travel down
the river. We will sleep on the deck of the boat. The
Felucca itself does not have toilets or showers, however we
will have access to a private support boat, travelling in
close proximity to our Felucca. This support boat is
equipped with toilets and a shower and an area to eat meals.
Accommodations on board the felucca.
|
|

Mount
Sinai |
|
Transfer by private
vehicle to the town of St Katherine's, base for climbing
Mount Sinai (estimated travel time 7 hours). Mt Sinai, the
place where the Ten Commandments were said to have been
revealed is perfect for viewing a glorious sunset. Depending
on time, the weather and group wishes, a possible
climb during the afternoon in time to see the sunset or wake
early and climb for sunrise the following day. There are two
ways to the summit: the camel path (possible to
hire a camel for part way up) or choose the
"quick but deadly" 3750 stairs to the top. Travel times
depends on various factors (2-3 hours to reach
the summit and approx 1.5 hours to descend).
|
| Nov 13
Red
Sea |
|
If we climbed through the dark to
see the sunrise, we will descend and have breakfast at the
hotel before setting off to visit the Monastery of St
Katherine's, the smallest diocese and oldest Christian
monastery still in use in the world. It houses not only a
rich collection of icons and precious manuscripts but also
the only existing relative of Moses' biblical burning bush.

hours) to a beach getaway near Nuewiba for some relaxation
with a chance to swim or snorkel in the Red Sea.

Nuweiba, Egypt to Aqaba, Jordon
|
|
Lazy morning. Ferry across Gulf of Aqaba to Jordan.
May take some time to get through the border
points.
We have been warned there is only one daily ferry
from Nuweiba to Aqaba. This ferry has no set schedule and is
extremely erratic, as it waits in Jordan until it is full
and then makes the crossing to Egypt and then returns to
Jordan. It is not uncommon for the ferry to be delayed
sometimes up to 3-4 hours. The ferry crossing is 1.5 hours.
Accommodations in Aqaba.
|
|
Morning exploration of Aqaba.
Noon start for 1 hour 4x4 desert drive to Wadi Rum; home to
the nomadic Bedouin people to learn more of this ancient
culture. A traditional Bedouin meal and perhaps an
evening around a fire listening to stories told by our Bedouin
hosts.
Accommodations: one long goat-hair tent divided by blankets
into twin-share “rooms” for privacy.
|
| Nov 16 & 17
Wadi Rum to Little Petra (Bayda) to Wadi Musa to Petra to Wadi
Musa |
|
From Wadi Rum
camp drive to Petra (estimated travel time 2 hours).
En route, some time at Little Petra (Bayda). Check
into hotel in Wadi Musa (for 2 nights) and on to Petra. The ancient Nabatean city of Petra is one
of the Middle East's more spectacular sites. Explore the
imposing façades of its great buildings and tombs.
Accommodations in Petra town (Wadi Musa).
|
|
Nov 18 Petra to Madaba
|
|

Highway, stopping at Shobak Castle, one of Jordan's most
significant and impressive historical sites and Kerak Castle, the largest Islamic castle in
Jordan.
Mount Nebo is the highest peak in the Moabit range and a
centre for pilgrimages since the earliest Christian times,
as the possible location of Moses' death. The town of Madaba
is home to some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world
including the famous sixth century mosaic map of Palestine.
Estimated travel time: Petra to Madaba, 10hrs (including
stops)
Accommodations in Madaba.

|
Mid-morning departure for Dead Sea.
The Dead Sea is actually a lake,
without any form of life whatsoever. The water is so dense that
it is practically impossible to sink, being five to ten times
more salty than regular sea water. We spend the morning at one
of the resorts, which provides access to the beach with plenty
of time for floating. The Sea's mud
is reputed to have special healing powers ... it also penetrates cuts and has an unusual smell but there will
be showers to wash it off.
After lunch travel to Amman, Jordan's modern
capital.
Accommodations in Amman.
